Families, caregivers, and rescuers often face sudden medical needs they cannot afford: a fever, a fracture, a surgery, an infection. When treatment becomes financially unreachable, there is no insurance, no subsidy, no safety net to step in.
Behind every street cat is a human story — a relocation, a financial setback, a medical emergency, a family change, or circumstances no one planned for. When a cat falls sick or is injured, most caregivers simply do not have the means to access urgent veterinary care. The result is silent suffering — not from lack of love, but from lack of access. Donut — From Drain to Dream
Before you ever meet Donut, you must understand one truth:
Some cats don’t eat because they’re hungry.
They eat because they remember starving.
Donut was one of them.
He was an adult male who had lived his whole life on one kind of food — cheap pellets. No wet meals. No hydration. No real nutrition. Just dry kibble, day after day. When he was eventually abandoned, that habit became a trap. Wet food was foreign to him. Survival meant clinging to what he knew, even if it wasn’t enough to keep him well.
He took shelter in a roadside drain — a long, narrow trench that seemed like protection but could have killed him at any moment. One strong monsoon rainfall could have swept him out to the road. Still, he stayed. It was the only “roof” he had.
And like many hungry, abandoned cats, Donut ate in fear.

Hershey’s Story — From Fragile to Fighting Spirit
Hershey — The Daily Commitment
Hershey came from a household in crisis — a low-income family caring for five sibling cats on the cheapest kibble they could afford. They loved their animals, but survival was slipping out of their hands. Behind the closed door of that home were deeper struggles: domestic aggression, a failing marriage, and a newborn baby the mother was barely able to cope with.
The cats were clean and cared for, but the situation had become too large, too complex, and too medical for them to manage alone. When the woman finally asked for help, she knew she had reached her limit.
Four of the cats were rehomed fairly quickly.
Hershey could not be placed.
He was already in trouble:

Chester started life on a lift landing.
Each time I passed by, he would come forward, asking quietly for food. At first he seemed like any other abandoned kitten — skinny, dirty, hungry — until I saw what was really happening: worms were exiting from his rear. He was severely infested, dangerously malnourished, and suffering more than he let on.
That was the moment he was taken in.
Chester received parasite control, deworming, nutritious food, and a safe place to rest. Slowly, his coat thickened. His weight returned. His bones no longer showed. His energy grew.
Later, I managed to trace his previous owner. She showed me a picture of Chester as a baby to confirm he was hers. She was struggling financially and already caring for his mother — a Persian Ragdoll — so she agreed to surrender him fully, wanting a better life for him.

Romeo came from a home filled with domestic violence.
Fourteen cats lived there.
Every day was shouting, smashing, fear, and chaos.
The unit was destroyed:
broken windows,
a damaged bathroom pipe,
smashed appliances and washing machine,
graffiti on every wall.
When the woman who lived there was hospitalised and the boyfriend jailed, the cats were left behind in the wreckage. When she asked for help, I stepped in with SPCA and Cat Welfare Society. Most of the cats were relocated to private fosterers until rehomed. The last three left behind were Romeo, Scottie, and Felix.
Romeo was the most traumatised.
He scaled windows and metal grills in panic.
He peed as he ran.
He cried when alone.
He was terrified of men — including my sons — and bolted at the sound of footsteps.
I returned daily for two months to feed the remaining cats.
It took the full two months before I could finally trap Romeo and bring him for treatment.
But his real recovery took almost a year.
Romeo was deeply bonded with Scottie.
Separated for treatment, they cried for each other.
When housed in nearby cages, they reached through the bars, playing footsies — paws touching between upper and lower decks — reassuring each other that they were not alone.
He was also very skittish with medication and handling.
Routine, patience, quiet voices, and careful feeding slowly helped him settle.
His medical conditions were extensive:

a severe ear infection,
systemic candida,
stress-related weight loss.
As each issue was resolved, his behaviour softened. He learned the household rhythms. He learned the voices. He learned he was safe. And he never forgot that Scottie was near. He learnt to trust and to play.
Today, Romeo is quiet, observant, and even playful. Still cautious with strangers — especially men — but no longer living in fear.
Romeo is healing.

Scottie was severely malnourished.

He was friendly from day one — but his condition told a harsher truth.
Felix was malnourished.
His body was crawling with mites.
He was heavily infested with internal parasites.
His fur was dull and underweight clung to him like exhaustion.
He needed treatment, proper food, and a clean environment to regain strength. And he responded beautifully — soaking up affection, leaning into hands, welcoming every bit of care he had been missing for so long.
Because of his temperament, Felix found a home quickly.

Sasha
Sasha is one of three sister cats whose world changed overnight.
When their owner passed away, the family cleared the apartment — but not the cats. The three sisters were removed from their home and left in the corridor outside the very door they once slept behind.
They didn’t understand what had happened.
They only knew one truth:
If we stay here, he will come back.
So they waited.
For years, the sisters slept on the same doormat outside the same apartment, pressed against the doorframe as if loyalty could turn a key. They depended on feeders who stopped by to give them food. They were skittish, frightened, and unwilling to let anyone near — not because they were wild, but because their world had broken in a way they had no words for.
Over time, one sister died.
Then the second.
Loss after loss, until Sasha was the last one left — a quiet survivor on a cold landing.
Eventually, a kind feeder managed to move her to a nearby staircase landing where she now lives. She is elderly, gentle, and still alone. She waits every day for food, for safety, for the kindness of strangers. Her loyalty to a home that no longer exists is heartbreaking in its simplicity.
Sasha’s story is not rare.
It is common.
And it is avoidable.
In Singapore, pet abandonment is an offence under the Animals and Birds Act — with fines up to $15,000 and potential jail time. But beyond the law, there is a deeper responsibility: ensuring our animals are cared for even when we no longer can.
